An exciting multi-faceted opportunity with BC Timber Sales

BC Timber Sales (BCTS) plans, develops, and sells through auction, a substantial and representative portion of the Province’s annual available timber volume. The bid prices received from auctioned timber support the Market Pricing System (MPS) in setting stumpage rates for coastal and interior operating areas of the province. The costs incurred by BCTS also provide data for the Tenure Obligation Adjustments, contributing to another integral part of the MPS. Operating with significant independence the FTELP Woodlands Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Forestry Technologist Entry Level Training Program (FTELP).  In coordination and collaboration with local Business Area staff the position is also responsible for employing sound business and forest management practices in the planning, development and management of a portion of BCTS operating areas within an assigned geographic area, in order to sell incremental timber volume through auctions of Timber Sale Licenses (TSLs).  The position will ensure operational activities of associated licensees are monitored for conformance to TSL conditions.  In discharging the responsibilities of this position the FTELP Woodlands Supervisor will need to engage various professionals such as engineers and foresters in order to attain appropriate advice and professional direction relative to their applicable scope of practice.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Applicant must be registered with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals (ABCFP) as a Registered Professional Forester.
  • BCTS experience related to the planning and development of Timber Sale licenses, as well as experience in one or more of the following disciplines: silviculture, timber harvesting, and engineering.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and managing complex concurrent initiatives.
  • Experience establishing collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with significant experience in coaching.
  • Applicant must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.

The Planning Officer is responsible for all the strategic and integrated planning processes required for the Business Area (BA). The position develops the Forest Stewardship Plan for the BA as well as participates in the development of higher level plans such as Land and Resource Management Plans. The Planning Officer identifies the fiduciary obligations of the BA with regard to First Nations groups and provides leadership to the consultation process. This position is accountable for ensuring that all planning initiatives are in compliance with legislative requirements, as well as represents the BA during planning audits.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • A Registered Professional Forester (RPF), or be eligible for registration as an RPF with the Association of BC Forest Professionals (ABCFP) and three years (gained within the last five years) of experience in operational forestry such as forest tenures, cut-block and road development, engineering, silviculture, harvest operations or compliance and enforcement.
  • Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.
  • Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry (Note: It is important that you read the job posting carefully to understand the specific security screening requirements pertaining to the position).
